THE MYSTERY MARAUDER AND THE THREE STUDENTS
by Cynthia Reeg

Ori, Loni, and Will shared a few things. Mr. Bernard, their teacher. 13 other second grade classmates. And Cottontail the class rabbit. Otherwise they were quite different.
Ori liked hot fries for his lunch.

Loni liked cold pizza for her lunch.

And Will loved a sandwich for his lunch.

One noontime the fire alarm sounded for a practice drill. Everyone scurried outside, leaving their lunches on the table in the cafeteria. Soon the all-clear bell rang, and they returned inside.
"Look," said Ori. "Someone's been eating my fries."
"Look," said Loni. "Someone's nibbled up half of my pizza."
When Will sat down, his mouth popped open in surprise.
"Look!" he cried. "Someone's eaten every bite of my sandwich."
The three trudged back to their classroom. Had one of the other students played a joke on them?

Ori stopped in mid-step when he reached his desk.
"Look. Someone has jumbled my penmanship papers."
Loni shook her head.
"Look. Someone has torn my math paper."
Will gasped.
"Look! Someone has put a big hole in the middle of my spelling paper!"
The three showed the messy papers to Mr. Bernard. He shook his head. Who could have done such a thing?
Later, the final bell rang and the class gathered up their things.
"Hey," said Ori, "I can't find a mitten."
"Hey," said Loni, "I can't find my woolen muffler."
"Hey!" cried Will. "Look what I've found."
Ori, Loni and Mr. Bernard peeked behind the coat rack. They looked where Will was pointing.
"There's my mitten," said Ori.
"And my muffler," said Loni.
"And my coat," said Will. "With Cottontail on top of it all. Taking a nap!"
"Well," said Mr. Bernard, "No one had even noticed Cottontail's escape. We certainly must be more careful when closing her cage door."
"I'll bet the alarm scared her, and she jumped out of her cage then," said Ori.
"And I'll bet she was the one who helped herself to our lunches in the cafeteria," said Loni.
"And messed up all our papers on our desks," said Will.
Cottontail blinked open her bright eyes, ready to hop away.
"Oh, no you don't," said Mr. Bernard. Will scooped the bunny up in his arms. Ori opened up the cage door. Will popped Cottontail inside.
"So, Cottontail," said Loni, as she carefully latched the cage door. "That should keep you hare today and hare tomorrow, too."
Will and Ori laughed. "You said it!"
