Children’s Literature Publishing Update--July 2008

BOOK PUBLISHING NEWS

BECKER & MEYER: In mid-July, Robin Cruise became the publisher of Becker & Mayer's juvenile book group. This is a new position. She will be leaving Harcourt Trade as deputy publisher/executive managing editor of children's books. Publishers Lunch 5.20

BLOOMSBURY USA: Children’s book sales and marketing director, Diana Blough, is now also an associate publisher. ANASTASIA SUEN’S MARKET NEWS 4.16

CHRONICLE: Handprint Books was acquired by Chronicle Books and will remain an imprint with Christopher Franceschelli at its helm, publishing four to six new titles each year. Since 2000, Handprint Books has been distributed by Chronicle Books. PL 5.23

DEL RAY MANGA: Tricia Narwani has been promoted to editor. A. S. MARKET NEWS 4.15

HARCOURT: Liz Van Doren, who was an editorial director of Harcourt Children’s Books, has become the new editor-in-chief at Black Dog & Leventhal. A. S. MARKET NEWS 5.30

Harcourt Children'sBooks will be a separate imprint within Houghton Mifflin. Jeannette Larson was promoted to Editorial Director, Picture Books, and Kathy Dawson to Editorial Director, Fiction. PL 6.12

Aaron Tibbs joined Harcourt as v-p of SmartLab, the book and toy science kits division, and Meghan Cleary has been promoted to Editor. A.S. MARKET NEWS 6.16


HARPERCOLLINS: Book editor and publisher, Joanna Cotler, as of May 13 is an editor-at-large for the company and no longer the publisher of her imprint, Joanna Cotler Books. She will edit select titles only, and these will be the sole titles published as Joanna Cotler Books. The number of imprint titles published yearly is to be determined. PW Daily 4.30

Cotler's senior editor, Karen Nagel, will be leaving HarperCollins. Associate editor, Alyson Day, will oversee the imprint's titles at another editorial group in the company. A. S. MARKET NEWS 5.5

Anne Hoppe has become executive editor at The Bowen Press, an imprint of HarperCollins. Hoppe was formerly executive editor at HarperCollins Children's Books, For the imprint, Hoppe is working on a new YA series, Emily the Strange, as well as a picture book from Lynn Johnston, creator of the comic strip, For Better or For Worse. Brenda Bowen, will be in charge of the new children’s book imprint, Walden Pond Press. Walden Media joined with HarperCollins to create this fiction imprint for young readers. A. S. Market News 5.19

Gretchen Hirsch has moved from Harcourt to become Associate Editor at HarperCollins Children's' Books. PL 6.12

HYPERION: Barbara Jones has become the editorial director of Voice. She also remains an executive editor for Hyperion as well. Voice plans to double their yearly titles to 24 hardcovers. PL 5.27.2008

LITTLE BROWN: Liza Baker, formerly editorial director of LB Kids, has been promoted to editor-in chief of Little, Brown Books for Young Readers, where she will assume charge of both the editorial staff and acquisitions for Little, Brown and LB Kids imprints. Fatimah Khan has been promoted from assistant editor to associate editor. A. S. MARKET NEWS 4.21


PENGUIN: Former President of the Penguin Young Readers Group, Doug Whiteman, has become the executive vice-president of business operations for Penguin Group USA. Former Random House executive vice-president and chief operating officer for North America, Don Weisberg, has become the new president for Penguin's children's division. Barbara Marcus, former Scholastic president of children’s book publishing and distribution, is also joining the group as a strategic advisor. PL 5.14

Pam Dorman is leaving Hyperion’s Voice imprint, which she helped to create in 2006, and returning to Viking Penguin, where she had previously worked for 19 years. She will be the publisher of Pamela Dorman Books. She is looking forward “to building a strong, up-market and talented group of authors in this new imprint.” PL 5.27

At Penguin Children's, Felicia Frazier has been hired as senior vp, director of sales. Most recently she was vp, sales director for the national accounts, brand & category management team at Random House Children's. PL 6.25

SCHOLASTIC: At Scholastic's trade publishing division, Taline Najarian has been promoted to director of special sales, and Deena Fleming moves over to designer for Cartwheel & licensed books. PL 5.23

Debra Dorfman, effective in June, returned to Scholastic’s trade division as the vp and publisher for paperbacks, Cartwheel, and licensed publishing. She reports to division president, Ellie Berger and works with group publisher, Suzanne Murphy. Formerly, Dorfman was president and publisher at Penguin Children’s Grosset & Dunlap/Price Stern Sloan division. PL 5.20

Dr. Clayton Wilcox, superintendent of schools in Pinellas County, Florida since 2004, will become the vp of education and corporate relations. His job will focus on "building relationships with district administrators, state departments of education and non-governmental organizations, which will help to further strengthen Scholastic's understanding of important education issues and help guide the company in finding ways to better partner with stakeholders to improve learning in schools nationwide." PL 4.18

In Scholastic's trade publishing division: AnnMarie Harris has become a senior editor in the trade paperback group, and Victoria Tisch has been hired as associate director, advertising and marketing operations. PL 4.25

Anna Bloom has joined Scholastic as editorial assistant, trade paperbacks. A. S. MARKET NEWS 4.28

Annette Hughes joined Scholastic’s trade publishing division as director, national account sales. She was formerly with Harper Children’s. Kimberly Bayley moves up to cross channel associate manager. PL 6.06

Michael Joosten became an editorial assistant at Orchard Books. Michael Sherman was promoted to the new creative director for Klutz. Arthur A. Levine has become the vp and publisher of Arthur A. Levine Books. Victoria Kosara is a new publishing assistant. Divya Sawhney is a new publishing and production assistant. A. S. MARKET NEWS 6.23

SIMON & SCHUSTER: S & S Children's trade group, Anne Zafian has been named deputy publisher of the trade imprints. She will oversee S&S Books for Young Readers, Paula Wiseman Books, Atheneum, McElderry Books and a new and now unnamed west coast imprint. Her job focus is on sales and marketing organizations, supply, inventory, and customer relations. PL 4.18

S & S Children's announced these promotions, Jennifer Klonsky to editorial director of Simon Pulse. Michael del Rosario to associate editor. Courtney Bongiolatti to associate editor at Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers. PL 5.09

Lucille Rettino became senior director of Pulse/Aladdin marketing. Chrissy Noh became marketing associate, advertising & promotion, and Matt Pantoliano became an online marketing manager. PL 4.28

Emily Lawrence joins S&S as an associate editor, having previously worked at HarperCollins. CBI 6.2008

ZONDERVAN: (the evangelical Christian wing of HarperCollins) HarperCollin’s ceo, Jane Friedman, spoke in May about the company’s realignment in the hopes of streamlining its operations by reductions in management and by creating eight business units which will focus on these markets: Youth Specialties, Vida (Spanish), Bibles, Trade Books, Church/Academic Reference and Resources, Zonderkidz, Digital, and Church Engagement. MAGAZINES

CONSERVATIONIST FOR KIDS: This nature and environment magazine for kids in New York State is no longer accepting outside submissions but is producing the magazine internally, according to editor Gina Jack. SueB. 5.28

MY LIGHT: New Market MY LIGHT http://mylightmagazine.tripod.com/ is a new Catholic-themed magazine for children to age 12. Editor, Jennifer Gladen says, "I'm aiming for the first issue to come out in August, but could use some contributors. It is a non paying market as of now. I hope to change

Worlds to Discover: a new bi-monthly fantasy magazine for children 8-14, is looking for African-American writers. www.worldstodiscover.com They are looking for exciting and original African-American fantasy/adventure stories with an international flair. The first issue is scheduled for October. This is a paying market.


Lisa Holton, past president of Scholastic Trade Publishing and Book Fairs, launched Fourth Story Media, a "studio" that produces children's stories in multiple formats. These stories will be in books and in many formats on the web. A.S. Market News 6.30
