Children’s Literature Publishing Update 2009

Michael Stearns, formerly with Firebrand Literary for the last year, has left to start his own agency, Upstart Crow Literary. Chris Richman and Danielle Chiotti will be joining him. As the World Stearns is Michael’s blog. He can also be on Facebook.

Jill Santopolo became executive editor in mid-August for Penguin Children’s Philomel imprint.

Brenda Bowen joined Sanford J. Greenburger Associates as a literary agent. She was formerly with Henry Holt, Disney/Hyperion, Scholastic, and Simon & Schuster. She will represent authors and illustrators of children’s books for all ages. bbowen@sjga.com

Fiona Simpson is now editorial director of Aladdin for Simon & Schuster Children’s.

Erin Molta, formerly with Little Simon, is now offering editoral help to writers at $25.00 per hour. emolta@optimum.net

Rebecca Frazer, is now with Jabberwocky as acquisitions editor.

Kelly Smith is now senior editor at HarperCollins, working with the Let’s Read and Find Out series. She was formerly an acquisitions editor at Sterling Publishing.

Namrata Tripathi has joined Atheneum Children’s as executive editor. She was formerly senior editor at Hyperion Children’s. She edits picture books through YA.
Lisa Cheng joined Tripathi as associate editor.

Elana Roth has left Parachute Publishing to become an agent with the Caren Johnson Estesen Agency. To submit, query directly with 3-5 sample pages in an email to elana@johnsonlitagency.com.

Jon Anderson, head of Simon &Schuster Children’s Publishing consolidated Atheneum and Margaret K. McElderry imprints. Justin Chanda, vp and publisher of S&S Books for Young Readers, will oversee both, and Emma Dryden, has left the company but will continue to edit some of her authors. Kevin Lewis, editorial director of the SSBYR imprint, has also left the company.

Mara Anastas, vp and deputy publisher of Aladdin and Simon Pulse, now oversees the consolidated Little Simon and Simon Spotlight imprints. Frank Totaro, vp and deputy publisher for the two consolidated imprints, has left the company.

Lauren Hodge was promoted to assistant editor at Little, Brown Children’s.

Liza Pulitzer Voges, formerly Kirchoff Wohlberg, now represents authors and illustrators of children’s books at her literary agency, Eden Street.

Jennifer Rofe, now agent with the Andrea Brown Literary Agency, and Jennifer Mattson, associate agent, accepts e-queries only.

Lindsay Winget, is now editorial assistant at Atheneum Books for Young Readers. She was formerly a literary assistant at Charlotte Sheedy Literary Agency.

Meredith Kaffel, agent at the Charlotte Sheedy Literary Agency, seeks both children’s and adult clients. Mail query with SASE.

Annette Pollert, was promoted in April to assistant editor at Simon Pulse.

Christopher K. Navratil became the new publisher of Running Press, replacing Jon Anderson who joined Simon & Schuster’s Children in January.

Debra Lande, formerly with Chronicle Books, is the publisher at Klutz, acquired by Scholastic in 2002.

Mark McVeigh, formerly editorial director of Aladdin, has created The McVeigh Agency, which handles both children’s and adult authors and illustrators. email queries

Daniel Ehrenhaft, formerly with Alloy Entertainment, is a middle grade and YA acquisitions editor with Sourcebooks.

POCKETS magazine, as of September 2009, will change their format to smaller page size with more photos and graphics and shorter fiction. They seek stories from 600-900 words as well as poems, games, puzzles, and articles about real kids.

Paul Rodeen, formerly with Sterling Lord Literistic, now has his own agency, Rodeen Literary Management, which seeks writers and illustrators of all genres of children’s literature. Email only.

Michelle Andelman, formerly with Andrea Brown Literary Agency, is a children’s book agent at Franklin & Siegal’s Lynn C. Granklin Associates, Ltd. She seeks juvenile fiction, middle-grade, and YA fiction. Email queries only.

Kelly Sonnack, formerly with Sandra Dijkstra Literary Agency, has joined Andrea Brown Literary Agency. She represents primarily children’s literature.

Caroline Abbey was promoted to associate editor at Bloomsbury Children’s Books.

Mary Kate Castellani was promoted to associate editor at Walker & Company.
